The Walking Dead midseason finale featured an unidentified teaser for Guillermo del Toro’s The Strain. This viral marketing ad consists of two video clips from camera phones, in which rats scurry about. The only clue was the briefly flashed phrase “He is here.”
He is an ancient vampire known as the Master (Robert Maillet) that is hunted by Professor Abraham Setrakian (John Hurt in the pilot / David Bradley in the series). Setrakian’s grandmother would scare him into finishing his plate or “He will come.”
The Master and his brethren aren’t traditional vampires but parasites that transform humans in creatures with tentacle tongues instead of fangs. They have science-based aversions to sunlight and silver but are immune religious superstitions like crucifixes.
The Strain will air on FX in July 2014.
