“It’s something that we’ve been working on for a while,” said Fox president of entertainment Kevin Reilly. “We have real estate on our schedule in Saturday night late night that we’ve not been programming in quite a few seasons.”

Animation Domination HD won’t only be competing with Saturday Night Live, it will also have a strong online presence that will extend across platforms such as Web, mobile apps, game consoles and Video on Demand. It kicks off in 2012 and will feature 50 original short-form pieces per year, online windows of FOX animated shows, and user-adapted content. It will create a unique opportunity for fans and up-and-coming talent to engage with professional FOX-curated content, which they could possibly platform into their own series. FOX will also use its expertise and cross-promotional power to nurture these new assets through this pipeline.

“This may be the first time a network is building a clear bridge for talent to develop and grow ideas in the digital/alternative arena and organically move them into the mainstream,” said Reilly. “These new late-night series will be assets in their own right – but the clear possibility exists for a breakout digital success to graduate to primetime.”

The first season will include Axe Cop, which is based on a webcomic about an axe-wielding cop, whose battle cry is “I will chop your head off!”

If it sounds childish, there’s a good reason for that. Axe Cop was created by 5-year-old Malachai Nicolle, and his 29-year-old brother, Ethan Nicolle, who does the art. Malachai has dreamed up an endearing black and white world with simplistically absurd answers to equally preposterous problems. When Axe Cop needs to fight an unknown enemy, he uses dinosaurs because whatever it is “it can’t beat dinosaurs.” He summons the dinosaurs from dinosaur planet with a dinosaur horn, which he gets from the dinosaur horn store (duh). Having a child author also results in some political incorrectness. Axe Cop refuses to let girls on his team because all girls are dumb (except Best Fairy Ever) and can’t fight, which he proves by smacking them upside the head with his axe. Axe Cop doesn’t even have time for women in his personal life because he’s married to his job, which he explains in a fan mail Q&A segment called “Ask Axe Cop” (video below).

“Axe Cop is one of the most creative, hilarious and naturally viral comic properties to emerge in the last decade,” said development head, Nick Weidenfeld. “I’ve hoped someone would adapt Axe Cop for television for years and couldn’t be happier that we get to be that someone. Axe Cop has all the makings of an iconic animated series and it will help set the tone for Fox’s new late-prime Saturday animation lineup.”

The voice cast will include Seth Green as Batman, Robin and Aquaman; Paul Reubens as the Riddler; Neil Patrick Harris as Two-Face, Alfred Molina as Lex Luthor; Nathan Fillion as the Green Lantern; Megan Fox as Lois Lane; and Breckin Meyer as Superman. Additional voice cast includes Abe Benrubi, Alex Borstein, Clare Grant, Tara Strong, Senreich, Tom Root and Zeb Wells.

“Having been raised on DC Comics and the Super Friends vs. Legion of Doom, it’s exciting to tell a whole Robot Chicken story within this awesome universe,” said Robot Chicken creator Seth Green.

“We’ve been working with (DC Entertainment chief creative officer) Geoff Johns for over 15 years, so playing together on this special only made it more fun to work in the worlds we all love so dearly,” added co-creator Matthew Senreich.

“Working with Seth and Matthew and the rest of the Robot Chicken crew has always been nothing short of insanity over the years,” said Johns. “DC, Warner Bros. Animation and Adult Swim together — how could anyone resist?”

The team faces off against the retro super villain Mad Mod, who uses a time machine reminiscent of the TARDIS to make himself young again. However, it also affects his henchmen and the Teen Titans. They transform into previous incarnations of themselves circa the 90s, 80s, 70s, and 60s. Eventually, they travel to the future where Robin the Toy Wonder from DC One Million meets some unfamiliar teammates ripped from the pages of Titans: Scissors, Paper, Stone. It’s no wonder Robin doesn’t recognize them. The designs are by Derrick Wyatt, who created the character sheets in 2006 for the Teen Titans cartoon but they never appeared in the show.

In a recent interview with the Smithsonian creator Matt Groening revealed:

Springfield was named after Springfield, Oregon. The only reason is that when I was a kid, the TV show “Father Knows Best” took place in the town of Springfield, and I was thrilled because I imagined that it was the town next to Portland, my hometown. When I grew up, I realized it was just a fictitious name. I also figured out that Springfield was one of the most common names for a city in the U.S. In anticipation of the success of the show, I thought, “This will be cool; everyone will think it’s their Springfield.” And they do.

“…and that’s the end of that chapter.”

But the story doesn’t end there. Despite what many are reporting, Groening never actually said the Simpsons family resides in Oregon. He only said that the fictitious town was named after Springfield, Oregon.

Even Homer Simpson is playing coy on twitter. “That’s right, the Simpsons live in Oregon — California’s toupée,” Homer tweeted. However, he immediately followed it up by saying, “Do you think if the Simpsons lived in Oregon Grampa wouldn’t have been suicided a long time ago?”

The Simpsons will reportedly reference Springfield’s location on Sunday night’s opening chalkboard gag. Perhaps: “I will not give out my address to strangers.”

Several of the episodes featured censored nudity rather than cutting it altogether as is typical. Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki pixelated a giant naked woman and Blue Submarine No. 6 edited out the nipples of a topless mermaid.

Even the CG host, Tom, had a more adult tone. He recommended fans buy the Outlaw Star DVD in order to: “Get it in the way Toonami could never give it to you, with nudity and more violence.” And he references Jay-Z in a promo for the harem anime Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki: “He’s got 99 problems and these bitches are the main one.”

Steve Blum, who voices Tom, has started a petition on facebook to bring back Toonami permanently:

Meanwhile, Clyde sues the ghost of John Harrington, inventor of the toilet, only to discover that both sexes have been using the toilet incorrectly. Harrington explains, “You can’t sue me. You’re all using my toilet invention the wrong way. When you have to sit and take a Sir Harrington, you’re supposed to be facing this way so you can use the little shelf for your books and your quill and your ink. Why would I design it so that when you’re finished taking a Sir Harrington, you have to stand up, turn around, and look down, right at your Harrington to flush? That’s gross.”

The episode ends with Clyde using the toilet the proper way but when he’s done, he defiantly puts the toilet seat up and gives the middle finger to his mother in heaven.

DC Nation will also include live-action segments, with an emphasis on action. Every week, weapon specialists test super hero gadgets in the real world. Naturally, the demonstrations succeed as the alternative would be like disproving Santa, who totally exists kids. Consequently, the tests are child’s play like breaking fragile champagne glasses from 40 feet away with Green Arrow’s boxing glove arrow. Then again, maybe the tests are so simple because just like the mall Santa the demonstrator isn’t the real thing.

In “At Long Last Leave,” the Simpsons are banished from Springfield for causing too many shenanigans. You can almost hear Comic Book Guy yelling, “Simpsons did it!” (see: The Simpsons Movie) The exiled family moves off the grid to the Outlands, which has its own theme.

WORST… 500th episode ever!

The self-deprecating episode ends with plea for mercy: “Thanks for 500 Shows. All we ask is that you go out and get some fresh air before logging on the internet and saying how much this sucked.”
