In what’s gotta be the best origin story ever, it documents Dr. Horrible’s (Neil Patrick Harris) rivalry with the self-absorbed hero Captain Hammer (Nathan Fillion) for the affections of Penny (Felicia Day), which ultimately spurs Dr. Horrible into joining Bad Horse’s Evil League of Evil (E.L.E.). It’s almost heroic, in an evil sorta way.

Sure you can stream it for free (http://www.drhorrible.com/), but the extras alone make it worth buying. In addition to the standard “Making of…” (which is actually pretty entertaining), there’s Commentary! The Musical. That’s 14 new songs in commentary form, my favorite of which is the self-deprecating “Asian in the Movies” (complete with stereotypical oriental riff). Plus there’s Evil League of Evil application videos, a collection of villains that make Dr. Horrible’s henchman Moist look like a tsunami of evil. My only criticism is that there’s no alternate ending for “that” highly controversial twist. But who knows. Apparently there’s talk of a sequel… perhaps a prequel?
