After a year in office, President Obama is finally making good on his promise to repeal “Don’t ask, don’t tell,” which has discharged more than 13,000 soldiers since it was passed in 1993.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates says “The question before us is not whether the military prepares to make this change, but how we best prepare for it.” Gates will conduct a yearlong review that will look at the views & attitudes of servicemen, the necessary policy revisions regarding base housing & fraternization, and the impact on military effectiveness.
Obviously the biggest obstacle is going to be housing because despite the argument by some that our military men & women are professionals, there’s a reason barracks do not have co-ed showers or rooms. But at the same time, I don’t think separate bathrooms will go over big with gay activists, even if they did have a cute little rainbow man on the door.
