Legendary Pictures, the same studio behind the much anticipated Clash of the Titans remake, is bringing Godzilla back to America in 2012. But Zilla won’t be making a return appearance. Studio executives want to avoid the look and feel of the 1998 film.
“Our plans are to produce the Godzilla that we, as fans, would want to see. We intend to do justice to those essential elements that have allowed this character to remain as pop-culturally relevant for as long as it has,” explains Thomas Tull, chairman and CEO of Legendary Pictures.
But what exactly are those essential elements?
First and foremost, Godzilla is not a bad guy (contrary to what some people think). He is a force of nature that more often than not saves us, if only from ourselves. We root for, not against, Godzilla. And the iconic Godzilla theme music is essential. It’s the difference between a monster and star.
The project has been pushed back until 2014 to focus on another kaiju film, Pacific Rim.
