Torchwood, the British organization charged with protecting the world from extraterrestrial threats, has been renditioned to America by Starz. Last season, Torchwood disbanded after coming to the realization that people in their line of work have a very short life expectancy. That won’t be a problem this time around as people have stopped dying altogether, an event dubbed Miracle Day. However it causes a population explosion that will consume the world’s resources within weeks. While the rest of the world becomes immortal, Torchwood’s leader Captain Jack Harkness finds himself vulnerable for the first time since being infused with time vortex energy in Doctor Who “The Parting of the Ways.”

Jack’s newfound mortality couldn’t happen at a worse time. Assassins are targeting the remaining members of Torchwood, giving Starz the perfect opportunity to show off both their increased budget and freedom from censorship. Despite a huge explosion the suicide bomber survives but probably wishes he didn’t. His charred skin and exposed bones make him look like Tarman from Return of the Living Dead. Jack decides to put this zombie to the test by severing his head. Just when it looks like it’s finally dead… its eyes open!

Cable is a great fit for this adult-themed spinoff of Doctor Who, and you can watch the first episode for free @ Starz.com
