The University of Colorado – Boulder has an unwanted reputation for weed. Each year at 4:20 p.m. on 4/20 thousands gather on Norlin Quadrangle to “protest” marijuana laws by lighting up. This year the only grass smell was coming from the fish-based fertilizer.

“We’re able to enrich the grounds here, which are lovely, and then we can also create an extra deterrent for people to show up today,” said university spokesman Bronson Hilliard. “You know, to be very candid, the goal of all of this was to make it kind of an unpleasant experience to be here today for anyone who planned to come for 4/20.”

The fun police also cordoned off the area to visitors, and students were lured away by an campus concert featuring Wyclef Jean, who was banned from referencing marijuana but did anyway.
