NetherRealm Studios (Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe) will once again in bring out the darker side of superheroes with Injustice: Gods Among Us. Ahead of E3, they’ve released a trailer that asks “What if our greatest heroes became our greatest threat?” It features some very violent but bloodless scenes like Wonder Woman holding a knife to Harley Quinn’s throat. Fortunately for her, there’s no decapitation in this game.

“DC understandably will never let us cut Batman’s head off,” explains Creative Director Ed Boon. “They’re never going to let us stab Wonder Woman in the face… In this format they’re never going to do something like that. Violence is replaced with crazy, over-the-top action. We’re making big, action-movie, over-the-top, kind of Transformers, Dark Knight, Spider-Man-type [action]. All the events you see in those kinds of movies is what we’re trying to capture in this thing.”

The big draw will reportedly be destructible and interactive environments. Each character uniquely interacts with their surroundings. Batman will throw you against a car, while Wonder Woman will simply throw the car at you. However, these “powered” characters won’t be unstoppable because “gadget” characters like Batman will get some extra firepower courtesy of the Batmobile! You can even knock your opponent into new environments to gain an advantage.

Playable characters include Batman, Superman, Flash, Wonder Woman, Solomon Grundy, Harley Quinn, and Lex Luthor among others. Injustice: Gods Among Us will be out in 2013 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Nintendo Wii U.
