Physicists at Lund University in Sweden have duplicated a decade old experiment originally conducted in Dubna, Russia. It confirms the existence of Element 115 on the periodic table known as Ununpentium, which is Latin for 115. But it’s best known as the mysterious meteorite that creates Nazi zombies in the video game franchise Call of Duty. Likewise, this super-heavy element is not naturally occurring on Earth. It was created by smashing together different combinations of elements, in this case americium and calcium. The new element lasted only for a fraction of second before decaying and won’t cause the zombie apocalypse. In fact, the research will make the world safer says Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
“The skills that are acquired by conducting these heavy-element experiments can then be applied to solving national needs like stockpile stewardship and homeland security,” they explain. “For example, an improved understanding of the fission process will enable scientists to enhance the safety and reliability of the nation’s nuclear stockpile and nuclear reactors.”
Once the data is verified by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), Element 115 will be given an official name. Might I suggest, Zombium.
