Two new TV spots for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy debuted last night during the NBA finals. They’re mostly edits of the second trailer, in which team leader Peter Quill AKA Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) introduces them as opposed to the reading of their rap sheets given in the first trailer.
Quill doesn’t deny they’re criminals. He designates himself as a thief, Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) and Groot (Vin Diesel) as thugs, Gamora (Zoe Saldana) as an assassin and Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista) as a maniac.
“But we’re not gonna stand by as evil wipes out billions of lives,” he insists.
That evil is the Mad Titan Thanos (Josh Brolin), who is literally in love with Death and its female personification. He recruits the Kree warrior Ronan (Lee Pace) and Gamora’s nemesis Nebula (Karen Gillan) to retrieve an orb of untold power. Seriously… we have no idea what it does but if Thanos wants it, then it can’t be good.
Ronan shows a display of his power by releasing an energy blast from his hammer known as the Universal Weapon, which as the name suggests is capable of a multitude of abilities such as energy absorption, matter manipulation, teleportation, flight and time displacement.
The action scenes are accompanied by Blue Swede’s “Hooked On A Feeling” which is on a cassette tape labeled Awesome Mix Vol. 1, one of Quill’s prize possessions. He was abducted from Earth during the 80’s so expect lots more classic rock on the movie soundtrack. Given they’re outlaws maybe “Wanted Dead Or Alive” by Bon Jovi.
Guardians of the Galaxy release date: August 1, 2014.
