Godzilla returned home on Thursday to celebrate his 60th anniversary. A 14 X 17 meter-tall Godzilla mural was unveiled on the wall of Toho Studios in Tokyo. It took Japanese artist Masao Hanawa 3 months to complete the monster-sized project. Hanawa did a similar mural at Toho Studios for Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai.
The mural was unveiled by Gareth Edwards, director of Godzilla (2014), and Akira Takarada, star of the original Godzilla (1954), which has been digitally remastered for a nationwide screening starting Saturday.
“I’m honored,” Edwards said. “It’s just a phenomenal piece of work.”
Takarada made a cameo in the American Godzilla but the scene was deleted and will presumably be a Blu-ray and DVD extra.
