The Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer was originally supposed to debut on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. but it was leaked online so Marvel teamed up the trailer with a scene that proceeds Ultron’s entrance!
The superheroes enjoy some rare downtime at Avengers Tower. Thor (Chris Hemsworth) gently balances his unliftable hammer Mjolnir on a stack of magazines. Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) insists there is a trick to Thor’s hammer.
“Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor,” explains the magical inscription.
The Avengers take turns trying to lift the hammer. Tony Stark AKA Iron Man (Robert Downey) and James “Rhodey” Rhodes AKA War Machine (Don Cheadle) try to lift it together with the help of their armor but it doesn’t budge. Stark jokes that the literal translation is “whosoever is carrying Thor’s fingerprints.” Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) passes on on trying to lift it.
“That’s not a question I need answered,” she says.
Need, as opposed to want, implies she already knows the answer. As a former Russian-spy, she’s undoubtedly done unworthy acts but given her confident attitude she seems to be saying she already knows she’s worthy. It’s possibly a subtle nod to recent introduction of a female Thor.
Steve Rogers AKA Captain America (Chris Evans) is surprisingly unable to lift it despite doing so multiple times in the comic books. Rogers donned a new costumed and took the America out of his name after discovering his government’s involvement in creating a homicidal cyborg aptly named Nuke. The Captain wielded the hammer in Thor #390. More recently, Captain America used it to battle an evil version of Thor’s Hammer called the Hammer of Skadi in Fear Itself #7. This disparity could be setting up the hero for a fall. The trailer shows Captain America’s shield broken in half on the ground alongside the defeated hero.
Avengers: Age of Ultron premieres May 1, 2015.
