Homer and Bart have always had a stormy relationship but the Simpson men become mates in “The Wreck of the Relationship.” They’re shanghaied onto a father-son cruise by Captain Bowditch voiced by Nick Offerman, who says the role was a lifelong dream.
“I’m a huge fan of wood sailing ships and maritime lore, and so it couldn’t have been more perfect,” he explained in a behind-the-scenes look. “I’ve been dreaming about being on The Simpsons since I was a lad.”
But it wasn’t his familiarity with the sea that got him the job. Simpsons writer Mike Scully and personal friend chose him because he’s a “drunk jackass” joked Offerman. Captain Bowditch is an alcoholic, who self-medicates to deal with his pain. His problems undoubtedly stem for his own relationship with his father, who surely must be Captain Horatio McCallister. A father-son reunion would be much welcomed after the season premiere killed off Krusty the Clown’s father Rabbi Hyman Krustofski.
Captain Horatio McCallister does make an appearance but there’s no mention of any relationship between the two sailors. He greets Homer and Bart when they return to shore after bonding and agreeing to start respecting each other.
“Surely you would have never gone a sea adventure without your old friend the sea captain,” he asks the Simpsons, who quickly abscond to their car and quickly drive off.
The Simpsons “The Wreck of the Relationship” airs this Sunday 8PM on Fox.
