Every year more than 1.7 million women are diagnosed with breast cancer according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Italian artist Alexsandro Palombo re-imagined Disney princesses and other well-known female cartoon characters with mastectomy scars and pink ribbon pasties to promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.
The project titled “Survivor” features Disney Princesses: Cinderella, Snow White, Ariel (The Little Mermaid), Aurora (Sleeping Beauty), Jasmine (Aladdin), Tiana (The Princess and the Frog), Marge Simpson (The Simpsons), Lois Griffin (Family Guy), Wonder Woman, Jessica Rabbit (Who Framed Roger Rabbit), Betty Boop, Olive Oyl (Popeye) and Wilma (The Flintstones).

Palombo has used his contemporary art to promote a myriad of social issues such as bullying, domestic abuse and disabilities. He garnered national attention for his Disabled Disney Princesses series.
“Have you ever seen a disabled protagonist in a Disney movie?” he pointed out. “You sure don’t because disability doesn’t match Disney’ standards!”
