Darth Maul is too clever by half. The Sith Lord’s machinations get him cut down (again) by Obi Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars Rebels episode “Twin Suns.” Maul has sought vengeance against Obi Wan ever since he was cut in half and left for dead in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.
Revenge of the Sith
Maul (Sam Witwer) manipulates his reluctant apprentice Ezra (Taylor Gray) with a hologram of young Obi Wan (James Arnold Taylor), who has been declared dead by Senator Organa. The message foretells that “A new hope will emerge.” Ezra is convinced that Obi Wan is alive and travels to Tatooine to save him from Maul. Instead, he leads Maul right to Obi Wan (Stephen Stanton), who bears no ill will towards the Sith for killing his master Qui-Gon Jinn.
“I had no intention of fighting him though that seems inevitable now,” he informs Ezra.
It’s not until Maul realizes that Obi Wan is protecting someone on Tatooine that the Jedi takes up his lightsaber to fight. The “battle” is over in just 3 strikes. The last strike splits Maul’s double-bladed lightsaber just as in their first fight.
Obi Wan consoles his dying opponent by revealing that he’s protecting the Chosen One, Luke Skywalker. Maul takes solace in knowing he will defeat the Emperor whom he hates nearly as much Obi Wan.
Ezra tries to convince Obi Wan to join the rebels but he insists the young Jedi already has all he needs referring to his makeshift family. Ezra does not divulge the existence of master Kenobi to his crew suggesting his the last we will see of him.
