If I didn’t know better, I’d suspect Jonathan Kent was under the influence of red Kryptonite. In the new trailer for Man of Steel a young Clark saves his classmates from drowning by lifting a school bus out of the water. His father scolds him, “You have to keep this side of yourself a secret.” Clark asks, “What was I supposed to do? Let them drown?” Jonathan replies, “Maybe.”
Jonathan has always insisted Clark hide his powers, even forbidding him from playing sports, but the idea that he would ever suggest his son standby and do nothing while people die: BIZARRO! It’s his moral upbringing that makes Superman, Superman.
In case you think this is just a single instance of an overprotective father, Superman tells Lois “My father believed that if the world found out who I really was, they’d reject me.” With all this great fatherly advice, I can’t wait to see how Superman turned out.
