Good news, everyone! Futurama is back. Bad news, everyone! It’s the final season.
Wednesday’s mid-season premiere will feature 2 episodes:
“2-D Blacktop” in which the Professor joins a gang and takes street racing to a whole new dimension.
“Fry and Leela’s Big Fling” in which the couple take a romantic trip to what turns out to be an alien zoo.
Expect more relationship themed episodes leading up to the wedding of Fry and Leela in the series finale on September 4th.
It won’t be the first time Futurama has been canceled and it might not be the last.
Billy West, the voice of Philip Fry, tells Ology:
I won’t really know if it’s the end until the final episode, because I’ve got to experience it. [Sometimes] they leave a little wiggle room in there, but if it has this finality to it, then I’ll know that it’s over. I really won’t be able to tell until the last show. But I’ve always said [the show] was too good to not be on television. I think there’s still people vying for a stake in the show.
Coexecutive Producer Patric Verrone tells TV Guide:
We’ll see if it’s an audition for the next [incarnation, perhaps] direct-to-GPS. Or maybe Elon Musk or Richard Branson will decide they want to make some more episodes.
