Hollywood blockbuster movies aren’t going up, up and away! They’re just getting some sidekicks to help lighten the financial load.
Bleeding Cool is reporting that DC Comics will fill the space between Superman and Batman movies by churning out lesser-known properties such as Suicide Squad, Team 7, Deathstroke and Booster Gold, whose tagline is “The greatest hero the world has never heard of.”
Suicide Squad, which features what is essentially a supervillain chain gang, will have a pre-marketing budget of just $40 million, while other titles could be produced for as little as $20 million.
These low budget gritty indie movies will be released at a rate of two per year on a Spring/Fall schedule.
Also in the works is a Justice League Dark movie, which has a working title of Dark Universe. This supernatural version of the Justice League will be directed by Guillermo del Toro, a self-professed fanboy of DC’s darker heroes. According to del Toro, the team roster will include Swamp Thing, John Constantine, Zatanna, Etrigan, The Spectre and Deadman (pictured below left to right).
We’re unlikely to see half a dozen origin stories squeezed into a single film so DC will presumably copy Marvel’s success with the Avengers movie and preemptively introduce them through a combination of starring roles and cameos in these low budget films. In fact, del Toro has already suggested as much.
“They are making plans for the entire DC Universe. All the superheroes. All the mythologies. And part of that is Justice League Dark,” del Toro told Cinefilos. “They’re planning on TV, movies, all the media so we have to fit within that plan.”
