Big news from Japan! They’re rebooting everyone’s favorite giant monster (okay second favorite): Gamera! The Godzilla knockoff was originally a prehistoric monster that wreaked havoc on Japan but Gamera’s origin was eventually retconned to make him a good guy similar to Mothra. The giant turtle was now created by Atlantis to fight other giant monsters. Ironically, he took on a more evil appearance but the turtle’s appearance snapped back for the family-friendly Gamera the Brave in 2006.
A new Gamera movie is in pre-production and will be released in 2015 for the 50th anniversary according to Heisei Gamera: Perfection, a book documenting the history of Gamera.
The story is set in the modern day with today’s audience in mind says Shinichiro Inoue, President and CEO of Kadokawa Pictures. Gamera will reportedly take on a new form. The wording seems to suggest they’ll loose the rubber suit and opt for a CG approach similar to the upcoming Godzilla movie.
Full details along with pre-production art will be revealed in the May issue of Tokusatsu Newtype (Newtype The Live).
