The CW has green-lit The Originals, a backdoor pilot that aired on The Vampire Diaries.
“As soon as we saw last night’s episode of The Vampire Diaries, we knew we wanted more of The Originals – Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson have done a fantastic job with The Vampire Diaries, which is as fast-paced and well-written as ever, and Julie has created an equally compelling world for The Originals,” said CW President Mark Pedowitz.
The storyline follows the original vampire, Klaus (Joseph Morgan), as he attempts to wrest control of New Orleans from his protégé, Marcel (Charles Michael Davis). Most of all, Klaus wants the loyalty Marcel commands. His brother Elijah (Daniel Gillies) insists that the greatest loyalty is found among family, which has a new addition. Klaus learns he’s going to be a father as result of a fling with a werewolf, Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin). Their sister, Rebekah (Claire Holt), is understandably hesitant to join this family reunion. Klaus has literally broken her heart by staking her on multiple occasions.
The theme of redemption is anything but subtle. When the local bartender, Camille (Leah Pipes), critiques a street artist, it hits a little too close to home for Klaus.
“He’s angry, dark, doesn’t feel safe and doesn’t know what to do about it,” she surmises. “He wishes he could control his demons instead of having his demons control him. He’s lost, alone… or maybe he just drank too much tonight. Sorry, overzealous psych major.”
The misty-eyed bloodsucker replies, “No, I think you were probably right the first time.”
