CinemaCon attendees were shown the first trailer for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which changes the turtle’s origin story but rest assured they not aliens as initially rumored.
“There was that quote saying that we’re making [the Ninja Turtles as] aliens,” producer Michael Bay told Moviefone. “We’re not. It’s the ooze! It’s from the original source material.”
The difference is the exposure to the Mutagen Ooze isn’t an accident but an experiment by their archenemy the Shredder (William Fichtner). He tells reporter April O’Neil (Megan Fox) that her father helped him create the heroes in a half shell to bring order to the city, which is a war zone.
“Heroes aren’t born, they’re created,” the Shredder affirms.
The accidental origin of the turtles is fairly consistent in the comics, cartoons and movies but the origin of their sensei, Master Splinter, varies from a human who mutates into a rat or a rat that mutates into a human. It’s unknown which origin the latest movie will use for him. April, on the other hand, will almost definitely not be the comic book version of the character, who was a living drawing brought to life by a magic crystal!
