Matt Smith has more time travel in his future. The former star of Doctor Who has been cast in Terminator: Genesis, which will reboot the franchise.
“Smith will play a new character with a strong connection to John Connor (Jason Clarke),” reads the press release.
That doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be a good guy. A robot with sole purpose of killing John Connor would certainly have a “strong connection” to its target. Smith definitely has the body of a killing machine after bulking up for his starring role in the American Psycho musical. Smith won’t be the eponymous role though. Arnold Schwarzenegger will be back as The Terminator, which travels back to 1984 and eventually ages to his present appearance. Another T-800, or possible body double, will be played by bodybuilder Aaron V. Williamson. Smith could be the more streamlined, shapeshifting T-1000, which director James Cameron originally wanted to have in the first film but it was nixed because of the limited special effects at the time.
Another connection could be that it’s Smith’s character who invents time travel that allows John to send his father Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) back in time to meet his mother Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke). Who better than a Time Lord to create the Time Displacement Equipment (TDE)?
