Seth Rogen and the rest of the cast meet their onscreen counterparts in a Sausage Party alternate ending to the shocking cliffhanger. Firewater (Bill Hader) and Gum (Scott Underwood) break the fourth wall by revealing they are cartoons! They decide to confront their creators by traveling to the real world through a stargate. The movie abruptly ends as the characters vanish through the wormhole but they arrive in the real world in the alternate ending.
“The reason we cut it was because we weren’t getting the bang for our buck with that ending,” said co-director Conrad Vernon.
Never meat your heroes.
The alternate ending was included for the debut at the SXSW Film Festival. However, it was cut in order to flesh out the concept in a possible live-action sequel.
“We took away the [original] ending because we thought, well, if that was the first scene of the next movie it’s probably not what you would want it to be, with them just seeing us and finding us basically,” Rogen told Fandango. “But the idea of a live-action/animated movie, like a Who Framed Roger Rabbit?-style hybrid is also very exciting, mostly because Who Framed Roger Rabbit? is one of my favorite movies of all time.”
Fortunately, you don’t have to wait for Sausage Party 2. The alternate ending is one of many extras on the soon to be released Blu-ray and 4K editions.
The unfinished scene shows Frank and his friends arriving on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and standing on the star of James Franco, who voices the Druggie. They look on in horror as Seth Rogen (Frank), Edward Norton (Sammy Bagel Jr.) and Michael Cera (Barry) devour helpless hot dogs and bagels. Humans can only understand food when high according to the plot. Clearly cartoon physics don’t apply in the real world as Rogen is a proud pothead.
Sausage Party is out on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K November 8, 2016.
