Ever since Superman broke Batman’s back, the superhero has been hiding out in the Batcave but he makes a comeback in Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year Three #4.
John Constantine gathers superheroes and magicians at the home of Jason Blood AKA Etrigan the Demon. They’re also hiding, not from Superman but his magical ally the Spectre, the Spirit of Vengeance. Detective Harvey Bullock accidentally lowers a protection spell on the house when he opens the door to leave the fighting to the superhumans. The Spectre fires an energy blast through the door killing both Bullock and Blood before he can transform into Etrigan the demon, who is now trapped in Hell without a human host.
Zatanna puts a protection spell on the house but is unable to teleport them away without lowering it and leaving them defenseless. Constantine ridicules Batman when he suggests they check for a cellar. The magician tells the mere mortal that he’s out of his league and can’t punch his way out this problem so Batman punches him in the face.
Constantine has been pushing him for a while now. He dubbed Detective Chimp the world’s greatest detective, a title belonging to the caped crusader. To make matters worse, he made both of them ride in the backseat of his car then laughed at absurdity of a man in bat suit and a talking chimp.
Batman walks out the front door to talk to the Spectre “one man of vengeance to another.” He condemns the divine spirit for killing Bullock in his attack on the house but the dialogue is just ruse to allow the others to escape to the Tower of Fate, and impregnable fortress that exists outside of space and time. After teleporting everyone to safety, Zatanna goes back for him. Batman confronts Constantine about his attitude problem back at the Tower. The cocky Brit admits to goading him into getting angry.
“I need the guy I saw today — the guy who can stare down the Spectre,” he explains. “I need Batman.”
With his new-found confidence, it’s only a matter of time until we see him get some payback in the inevitable Batman VS Superman rematch.
